Introduction to compassion focused therapy

Compassion focused therapy (CFT) brings an evolutionary framework to the conceptualisation of mental health problems and their alleviation.

Practicing compassion has been shown to have powerful effects on the mind, body, and social processes.

This introductory course is designed to encourage the use of practices that stimulate compassionate mental states and those that build a sense of the compassionate self-identity.

This workshop will offer people direct experience of mindfulness and compassion practices drawn from a synthesis of Western therapeutic and Buddhist approaches.

Integrating mindfulness into the practice of compassion, offers a step-by-step approach to cultivating the inner compassionate self.

Participants will learn how to utilise body posture, breathing patterns, visualisations and behavioural practices to stimulate and strengthen psychological and physiological systems underpinning compassion.

Participants are guided through how to generate compassion qualities including the three major ones of wisdom, strength and commitment.

From this place we are then in a position to relate compassionately to the parts of ourselves that struggle, and to broaden our compassion to other people in our lives.

The compassionate mind can be used to address a variety of mental health difficulties and also to promote well-being strengthen flourishing.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

Participants should be competent in one form of psychotherapy and familiar with mental health difficulties.

They should have an interest in compassion focused therapies.

Some personal practice will be involved.

Session outline

Day 1:

  • Morning: introduction to the origins and evolutionary underpinnings of compassion
  • Afternoon: linking compassion to attachment theory and using the body to support the mind

Day 2:

  • Morning: developing insight into building the compassionate mind
  • Afternoon: using the compassionatemind to address problems like emotion regulation and self-criticism

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

This workshop will introduce participants to the origins of compassion focused therapy (CFT).

Participants will explore an evolutionary functional analysis of how compassion emerged from the evolution of caring behaviour associated with more recent evolved complex cognitive competencies

The workshop will outline the importance of distinguishing between motive, emotion, competency and behavioural/output systems.

Special attention will be given to the relationship between building compassionate mind states, attachment theory and classical conditioning.The workshop will also touch on some of the physiological underpinnings of compassion.

It will link to practices such as mindfulness, compassion visualisations and behavioural practices.Following this, participants will explore how to build client’s compassionate mind for addressing mental health problems, in particular working with multiple selves and self-criticism.

The compassionate mind can be used to help individuals differentiate, tolerate, integrate and transform various aspects of mind.

The workshop will be run with a system of PowerPoints, video demonstrations and personal practices.

HERE IS WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:

  •  Gain an understanding of how evolutionary functional analysis advances our understanding of mental health difficulties and in particular the importance of the evolution of attachment, caring and affiliation as part of the human affect motivation and regulation systems
  •  Gain an understanding of the 3 system affect regulation model (threat, drive and affiliative-soothing), which informs compassion focused interventions
  •  Be exposed to key compassion focused skills including the use of the breath and body postures, the practice of compassion focused imagery, the use of compassionate mind training to build the “compassionate self/mind”, employing the “compassionate self/mind” to engage with areas of difficulty and building supportive social relationships
  •  Gain an understanding of how CFT can be applied to clients with different problems especially those underpinned by self-dislike, self-criticism and poor affect differentiation

MEET PAUL GILBERtPaul Gilbert - founder of CFT

 

Paul Gilbert, FBPsS, PhD, OBE is Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Derby and honorary visiting Prof at the University of Queensland.

Until his retirement from the NHS in 2016 he was a Clinical Psychologist for over 40 years. He has researched evolutionary approaches to psychopathology with a special focus on mood, shame and self-criticism in various mental health difficulties for which Compassion Focused Therapy was developed.

He was made a Fellow of the British Psychological Society in 1993, president of the BABCP 2002-2004, and was a member of the first British Governments’ NICE guidelines for depression.

He has written/edited 23 books and over 250 papers and book chapters.

In 2006 he established the Compassionate Mind Foundation as an international charity with the mission statementTo promote wellbeing through the scientific understanding and application of compassion (www.compassionatemind.co.uk). There are now a number of sister foundations in other countries.

He was awarded an OBE by the Queen in March 2011 for services to mental health.

He established and is the Director of the Centre for Compassion Research and Training at Derby University UK.

His latest Book is Living Like Crazy.
